心月孤円、光、万象を呑む。光、境を照らすに非ず、境、亦た存するに非ず…
The mind moon, solitary and full, swallows myriad forms with its light…
宝積禅師という人が詩を詠んだ（正法眼蔵・都機）。
「心月孤円」。物心連続仮説によって、月と、月をみる心とは、ひとつのものだ。よって心月という。心月がたったひとつ、夜空にかかる。これが火星なら「両円」というのでしょう。土星だと、月は環状となってどう見えるのか。
「光、万象を呑めり」。その光が地上のあらゆる形象をしずかに包む。
「光、境きょうを照らすに非あらず。境、亦また存するに非ず」。「境」とは輪郭のある領域のことです（現代語ではその輪郭だけを指しますが）。山川草木、土塀や小石、みな「境」です。つまり境とは、ほぼ、物体のことです。「光が境を照らしているのではない、境もまた存在しない」とは、何を言っているのか。物体がなくても光があり、光がなくても物体がある––––という常識が否定されているのだと思われます。物は光と出会ってはじめて誕生し、光は物と遭遇してはじめて存在しはじめる。
「光境倶ともに亡もうず、復また是これ何物ぞ」。光と境と、同時存在し、そして同時消滅する。物が無くなるだけではなく、光が消えるだけでもなく、両方ともに滅びる。その風景は暗さとかを通り越しているんでしょうね。暗黒を突き抜けた BLACK。それを老子は「玄」と言ったはずですが、老子のどこに書いてあったか思い出せない。

The mind moon, solitary and full,
swallows myriad forms with its light.
The light does not illuminate objects,
Objects do not exist in site.
Light and objects both disappear,
what is this tranquil night?

Based on the mind-objects continuity, the moon and the mind that perceives it are one; the mind-moon. Its single full circle is in the sky. If the poet was on Mars, he would have written “double” instead of “solitary”. The moon light quietly falls on all objects, on mountains and rivers, on the sand and grasses.
But the poet does not describe the scene as the light illuminating objects, nor as objects exist by themselves. He cancels an ordinary view in which the light is present without objects and objects exist independently of the light. Instead, objects come to existence only when they meet the light, and the light begins its presence just as it encounters objects to be illuminated.
Not only that the the light and objects appear simultaneously, but disappear together. If and only if objects cease to exist, the light is lost. It would be darker than darkness. To the extreme darkness Laozi (老子) referred as “玄 xuén”, which I don’t remember where I found it.
